A Note from the Writer of Husband on Hire

This play is an English adaptation of Udhaar Ka Pati, a brilliantly sharp Hindi comedy by Dr. Vanmala Bhawalkar. I had the privilege of watching it live last summer, and something about it just lingered—The characters, the absurdity, the humor, the chaos and the warmth beneath it all. I walked out of that theater already imagining how I might bring it to a new stage and a new audience.

What you’ll see is not just a translation—it’s a re-imagination.

Translating comedy is like explaining a joke— the sparkle and cultural context can easily be lost. That’s why this version doesn’t just carry over the words—it carries over the spirit, with some parts lovingly and freshly adapted to reflect the quirks, diversity, and realities of our local community, while holding onto its original wit and charm.

Along the way, I found myself writing new parts, crafting sharper dialogues, and weaving in fresh satire—moments that not only evoke laughter but also reflect the quirks of our past and current times. And while the play is rooted in humor, I’ve also added layers of depth to some characters. You’ll find glimpses of comedy giving way to reflection. Some voices have been reshaped entirely, offering a fresh take that speaks to today’s world while honoring the heart of the original.

It’s been an absolute adventure—and a privilege—to reimagine, write, and produce this piece with so much love. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as we’ve enjoyed making it!
